Scott Gillingham Officially Registers for Re-election as Mayor of Winnipeg

Scott Gillingham officially registered today as a candidate for re-election as Mayor of Winnipeg in the 2026 municipal election, committing to a second term focused on delivering practical results and continuing the work of building a modern, growing city.

“When I ran for mayor in 2022, I said Winnipeg needed steady leadership, a stronger focus on basic services, and a more responsible approach to growth,” said Gillingham. “Over the past four years, we have made real progress. We have built more housing, fixed more roads, and finally moved forward on major projects that had been stuck for decades. I’m running again because I believe Winnipeg’s best days are still in front of us, and we cannot afford to go backward.”

Solving Decades-Old Challenges

During Gillingham’s first term, Winnipeg has moved forward on a series of critical decisions that had challenged the city for decades:

  • North End Water Pollution Control Centre: After 20 years of delay, the project is under construction to protect Lake Winnipeg while supporting the city’s long-term growth.

  • Portage Place: After 30 years of uncertainty, the site is being redeveloped into a multi-use hub for housing, health care, and community space in the heart of downtown.

  • Portage and Main: After 40 years of debate, the intersection has been reopened to pedestrians, creating a more accessible and vibrant downtown core.

“This is what steady leadership is about,” said Gillingham. “It means making the decisions that previous councils talked about for years but never got done. It means moving projects forward, solving problems, and building a city that is ready for the future.”

Unprecedented Housing Growth

Mayor Gillingham has prioritized housing as a standalone pillar of his administration, resulting in record-breaking achievements:

  • Historic Records: 2022 to 2025 marked the strongest four-year period for housing starts in Winnipeg's history.

  • Affordability: The City helped fund the development of more than 2,600 affordable housing units, the largest surge in 50 years.

  • Downtown Revitalization: More than 1,000 new downtown residential units were approved in 2025, reaching a 15-year high.

Record Infrastructure and Road Renewal

Since taking office, Gillingham has worked with Council to deliver the largest capital program in the city’s history:

  • Road Improvements: Approximately 550 lane-kilometres of roads have been repaved or rebuilt, and roughly one million potholes have been filled.

  • Neighborhood Services: Launched Neighborhood Action Teams to focus on local maintenance and service issues in communities across the city.

  • Modernized 311: Average 311 call wait times were cut from over 11 minutes in 2022 to under three minutes today.

Prioritizing Public Safety and National Advocacy

Gillingham has combined local safety investments with direct advocacy at the national level:

  • Safety Teams: Launched the Community Safety Team to patrol transit and public spaces and added 36 additional police officers to the service.

  • National Bail Reform: Traveled to Ottawa to push the federal government for stronger bail reform to address repeat violent offenders, ensuring municipal concerns are heard in the House of Commons and Senate.

The 2026 Winnipeg Municipal Election will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
